Hi, welcome to the Daily Spin. My name is Steve, I’m the owner of inlineskates.com, and with me today is Mike Powell. from K2 – the K2 Skate guru. Direct in from Seattle. Thanks for joining us, Mike.
Thanks for having me.
And in my lap here is a fast skate.
What do we call this skate? It is the Radical 100.
And it’s got some cool things going on. This is the short cuff series, the Radical series. And we’ve got carbon fiber down here we’ve got an aircraft aluminum frame, there’s a lot going on. I’m going to let you talk about it. All right. So, when looking at the Radical 100, this is the flagship skate for K2 that really brought big wheels to the masses. Before the Radical existed, people were skating on 84mm wheels. There’s nothing wrong with that unless you’re trying to win a race or skate as fast as you can, then you want to be on a bigger wheeled skate and this is a 100mm skate. It flies. Yeah, there we go. That’s what the cowbells are for. We built cowbells just for this product video. So, when you’re looking at the skate, you’ve got two Powerstraps. What that does, it lightens up the skate a little bit from having that ratcheting buckle but you still get all the secure-ness that you have in the skate. So, two Powerstraps definitely going to put your heel in the heel pocket, close up the top of the skate. Keep it light. Traditional lace here that’s going to give you a good fit and then when you look at the upper, it’s a very minimal upper with a sculpted cuff and this cuff here really allows for skating technique to take over. People who are experienced skaters really know how to get the most out of their skate and don’t need that super supportive cuff.
This is not for the beginner or intermediate, I want to make that clear. Not at all.
This is a person who isn’t looking for that upper ankle support and wants a lot of ankle articulation.
No, this is for the experienced skater who really knows how to move their ankles and make a skate work…there we go. Exactly. And they’re going to be hearing that while they’re skating on it. So, you have this sculpted cuff, you have the carbon fiber base that really transfers energy. I was just going to say, and that really is carbon fiber, right?
It’s not some models from some companies kind of look like it but they’re really not. No. No. And you can kind of feel it. It’s not just a pattern printed on it. It is so what this carbon fiber does it transfers the power to this frame and you can see this milled-frame right here, it’s a dual-buoyed frame so you can see the holes underneath that really reduce weight but keep it just torsionally really rigid. It’s meant for going as fast as humanely possible and staying stable at speed. And people skating this, they want to go as fast as humanely possible.
It’s a true aircraft quality aluminum, right?
Yes. Yes, it is. And then you have your 100mm wheels. It’s a straight 100 so you’re going to get speed out of this. It’s going to be stable at speed and, you know, it’s got that ILQ 9 classic plus bearing which keeps it, you know, rolling smooth and fast. Boo-yah.
So, that’s a skate for racing, training, go fast…
Yeah, it’s for the person who wants to go really fast. You might find them racing as well. I’ve seen this skate in many races, it’ll end up on the podium at times, but it is for someone who wants to fly and wants to be stable at speed and who has great skating technique.
Okay. So, there you have it. That’s the K2 Radical 100. This has been the Daily Spin. This is Mike, I’m Steve. Thanks for joining us.
