How to Ice Skate : How to do Backward Strokes on Ice Skates

Hi, I’m Simon Fisher and I’m here at the Clearwater
Ice Arena in Clearwater, Florida and on behalf of Expert Village. Hi, my name is Bill Shanks.
I’m going to demonstrate for you some backwards stroking. Backward stroking once again, it
is very important to keep your whole upper body and your core and you are strong in the
core. So we would start here and I’m going to give a push off and bring my foot forward
to a push. So basically what is going to happen move that we learn earlier we are going to
expand on that using one foot this time and give a push. Thank you!

0:50 nak you??? haha lol
i'm definatly going to try this next week when i go ice-skating i'm prob going to fall but… meh : )

The most common mistake people do is not to bend their knees… Feels weird when you start, but it is the right way πŸ˜‰

I managed to do this today
I could only do this, I can't do the basic thingy(you know, the one that you try to draw a ball)

wow.. when i watch it.. it seems like it's easy to do it.. but when u work on it it's hard.. it means.. i nid to practice..

Thank you. You make it look so easy. I go skating every Sunday morning but it gets really crowded and difficult to practice, but I do enjoy myself.

@profound13 Instead of thinking of it as "pushing", think of it as "shifting your weight back and forth". As you shift your weight and balance from one leg to the other, it will give you a gentle "push" on each side. I hope this helps.

Well I reckon it's good he's male and bald and whatnot because if it were a typical female ice skater, this video would be more popular among male teenagers than among ice skaters and we'd be reading a bunch of comments saying "shes so hott" in this section. The man demonstrates this well.

all of the tutorials automatically assume you know how to even move backwards…. I fall on my ass every time I try to even move an inch backwards…

a joke my friend made up in ice skating.
''damn!, i haven't been on ice for a long time''
thumbs up if you get the joke…. πŸ˜€

actually its not super hard if u can sdo backward swizels, which we learned a few weeeks ago, im trying these next week so i can do my backward 2 foot glide and hopefully pass my test and go to basic 3

oh, I was skating yesterday and I was losing the control all the time, but I didn't fell down, and that's because I was dancing to stop!!!!

Bbtw, nobody was laughing xD

i saw someone at the ice rink and no one really knew her name but she was excellent at doing tricks backwards and forwards so everyone called her "figurine girl" she was that good. SHE COULD ICE SKATE WHILE SITTING DOWN!

Bill, I just started ice skating at 58. I try to watch your vids B4 going to rink twice a week.
It helps! πŸ˜€

If you bend your knees and lean forward (but not too much or you will just stop yourself with the toepick), you won't fall on your butt.

Actually, that's how you skate backwards.. I mean, that is the first step of learning how to skate backwards, cause that is LOT EASIER than regular skating (backwards, of course). Or you can do the "sausages" (i have no idea of that move real name… It's just like that what they show on that video, but you move your both legs… :)) btw, sry my bad English

i cant ice skate properly but i can do backwards on roller skates-inline- just teaching my self(almost); but im too scared to try it on the ice especially if i go to public sessions where everyone's there, i cant control/stop myself so scared of falling, and its much diffrent.

Someone gave me a tip on this yesterday and it really helped. Keep your down foot under your hips, not out to the side. 80% of your weight is on that down foot and 20% on the push foot. Really bend your knee for your push foot. Make sure your not digging your down foot into the ice or you go in a circle. Hope this helps!

Im going to get new skates soon x.x Ima master this but I have a feeling I might hurt myself in the process xD

its when you go backwards or forwards in an oval shape (im not sure i explained it right) they are also known as lemons xD

This guy sucks, he doesn't explain it well, just watch me, thank you. Plus he's bald, middle-aged, kinda fat, dresses like a loser, and i'm sure the other skaters think he's a fucking loser.

He can obviously skate but is a lousy teacher, just here watch me, that's how you do it. I won't learn it from this schmuck.
