GET THEM HERE ON KMBC 9 NEWS. AN OLATHE MAN FINDS HIS TRUCK IN FLAMES AFTER LEAVING A LITHIUM-ION BATTERY ON CHARGE FOR TOO LONG. LARA: LOOK AT THAT — REALLY ON FIRE. MICHAEL MAHONEY REPORTS THE BATTERY WAS NOT ON ANY RECALL LIST MICHAEL: NO, IT WASN’T. THIS MAN WAS CHARGING HIS BATTERY LIKE MANY OF US DO, LAPTOPS, — THESE BATTERIES ARE DURABLE AND LAST A LONG TIME. NEWS STORIES LIKE THIS –>>I’VE USED MY CAR CHARGER. AND DESPITE PROBLEMS WITH LITHIUM ION BATTERIES, THE OLATHE FIRE DEPARTMENT SAYS THEY HAVE VERY FEW INCIDENT BUT IF A LITHIUM ION BATTE OVERHEATS, HISSES, OR STARTS TO BULGE, GET IT AWAY FROM ANYTHING FLAMMABLE IF YOU CAN, AND, IF POSSIBLE, GET IT OUTSIDE AND LET IT BURN ITSELF OUT. THESE LITHIUM BATTERIES ARE DANGEROUS SOMETIMES, BUT THEY ARE ALSO QUITE SAFE AND UBIQUITOUS, WHICH MEANS THEY ARE EVERYWHERE IN OUR SOCIETY.
