>>>GOOD EVENING. WELCOME TO “METROFOCUS.” SUBWAY GRAFFITI MAKING A COME BACK. ACCORDING TO THE THE CITY, THE MTA HAS SPENT MORE CASH ON GRAFFITI CLEAN-UP IN THE LAST YEAR. HOW DO WE AVOID GOING BACK TO THE OLD DAYS? HERE WITH MORE ON THIS IS JOSE MARTINEZ, SENIOR REPORTER AT THE CITY. WELCOME TO THE PROGRAM.>>THANK YOU FOR HAVING ME.>>THANK YOU. SO FIRST, LET’S START OUT WITH HOW MUCH MORE THE CITY HAS BEEN SPENDING ON CLEANING UP THESE TRAINS.>>THE MTA IN 2018 SPENT MORE THAN $600,000. THAT’S A 364% INCREASE FROM JUST TWO YEARS EARLIER. THE FIGURES HAVE TRENDED DOWN IN 2019. THAT’S ENOUGH FOR CUTTING BACK ON SOME OF THIS. THAT’S AN ALARMING JUMP. A LOT OF IT IS DRIVEN REALLY BY THE TAGGERS WANTING TO GET THEIR WORK SEEN ON SOCIAL MEDIA.>>OF COURSE, THAT LEADS ME TO MY NEXT QUESTION. FIRST OF ALL, WHY IS IT NECESSARY TO KEEP THE GRAFFITI OFF THE TRAINS? A LOT OF PEOPLE WILL SAY THIS IS AN ART FORM. THESE ARE ARTISTS. THIS IS PART OF THE FABRIC AND THE ESSENCE OF NEW YORK.>>IT IS SOMEWHAT OF A RETURN TO THE BAD OLD DAYS, IF YOU WILL. IT IS ASSOCIATED BY THE MTA AND THE TRANSIT BUREAU OF THE NYPD AS BEING LINKED WITH THOSE DAYS WHEN SERVICE WAS SO POOR. WHEN CRIME WAS HIGH IN THE SUBWAY. WHEN RIDERSHIP WAS WAY DOWN BECAUSE PEOPLE DIDN’T WANT TO GO ON A SYSTEM THAT WAS NOT INVITING FOR ONE THAT IS CLEANER. AND THERE ARE COSTS ASSOCIATED WITH WIPING THOSE TRAINS CLEAN. SO IT IS SOMETHING THE MTA DOESN’T WANT TO ENCOURAGE. BUT THAT THE TAGGERS, THOSE THAT THE NYPD WOULD CALL VANDALS, WANT TO GET OUT. IT IS DIFFERENT FROM BACK IN THE ’70s AND ’80 WHERE THE TRAIN WOULD ROLL ACROSS AN ELEVATED LINE AND IT WOULD BE SEEN AND THEN IT WENT OUT INTO MOVEMENT ACROSS THE WORLD. NOW IT IS ON SOCIAL MEDIA. THAT’S THE WAY TO GET THEIR WORK OUT THERE.>>THIS IS THE FAULT OF SPOCIAL MEDIA THAT WE’RE SEEING THIS GRAFFITI COME BACK.>>LIKE SO MANY THINGS. THERE ARE A LOT OF FEEDS ON INSTAGRAM WHERE YOU WILL SEE THE WORK OF TAGGERS. AND I SPOKE WITH SOME VETERAN GRAFFITI FOLKS AND THEY SAY, THIS IS NOT THE WORK OF PEOPLE FROM NEW YORK. THIS IS NOT THE LOOK THAT IS NATIVE TO THE CITY. VERY DIFFERENT. THEY SAY THEY WANT NOTHING TO DO WITH IT NOW BUT IT IS DRAWING PEOPLE FROM SPAIN, FROM AUSTRALIA. SO WITH THE NYPD AND WHAT THE MTA SECURITY DO, TRY TO KEEP AN EYE ON THE YARDS AND THE AREAS WHERE THEY GET HIT. IT IS VERY DIFFICULT. IT IS A HUGE SYSTEM. IT IS DIFFICULT TO PATROL. TRAINS ARE STORED UNDERGROUND AND THEY’RE RIPE FOR THE PICKING FOR THESE FOLKS.>>TO STAY ON THE ARTISTIC SIDE A LITTLE LONGER, SAY THAT THE CITY HAS EMBRACED GRAFFITI AS AN ART FORM IN SOME RESPECTS, IS THAT CORRECT?>>YOU LOOK NO FURTHER THAN THE ONE TRAIN. A PASSAGE WAY AT 190th STREET UPTOWN. THAT WAS A VERY DARK, DECREPIT PASSAGE WAY THERE FROM THE ONE TRAIN. AND IT WAS QUITE FRANKLY, PRETTY FRIGHTENING TO WALK THROUGH THERE. A COUPLE YEARS AGO, THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION COMMISSIONED A BUNCH OF ARTISTS TO DO GRAFFITI IN THAT PASSAGE WAY. NOW, IT’S BEEN A COUPLE YEARS. SOME OF IT HAS BEEN DONE OVER AND MESSED WITH. BUT IT CERTAINLY DID MAKE IT MORE INVITING. A LOT OF THE OLD TIME GRAFFITI FOLKS, THEY BECOME LEGITIMATE ARTISTS. LOOK AT THE BRONX. THEY’VE MADE BIG MONEY GOING COMMERCIAL. THERE ARE OTHERS THAT I CITED IN THAT ARTICLE THAT HAVE GONE ON TO BECOME ARTISTS IN THEIR OWN RIGHT. TAKING IT FROM THE SUBWAY. OUT OF THE SUBWAY. AND INTO A MONEY MAKING VENTURE.>>TO GO BACK TO THE MONEY ASPECT OF IT. IT SEEMS LIKE EVERY TIME WE HEAR ABOUT THE MTA SPENDING MONEY. WHY IS IT SO NECESSARY TO CLEAN THESE TRAINS? IT IS NOT LIKE, PEOPLE HAVE VERY FEW OPTIONS WHEN IT COMES TO GETTING AROUND THE CITY. THEY’RE GOING TO TRIED SUBWAYS.>>WHAT YOU DON’T WANT TO ENCOUNTER IS A DELAY BECAUSE TRAINS ARE TAKEN OUT OF SERVICE. MANY WOULD SAY KEEP IT GOING. LET THE TRAINS GO THROUGH THAT ARE TAGGED. THAT’S NOT SOMETHING THE MTA WANTS. THAT’S NOT WHAT THE NYPD WANTS. YOU HAVE TO CONSIDER THE HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS THAT THE CITY SPENT BACK IN THE 1970s AND ’80s TO FINALLY PURGE THE SYSTEM OF GRAFFITI BY 1989. THAT’S AN ANNIVERSARY THAT’S CELEBRATED AT THE MTA. THE FIGURES THAT WENT UP 2016 TO 2018. 364% INCREASE IN THE NUMBER OF GRAFFITI INCIDENTS. THAT’S SOMETHING THEY DO NOT WANT TO CELEBRATE.>>I DID NOT KNOW THAT 1989 WAS A PIVOTAL YEAR FOR THE MTA.>>THE C TRAIN HIT THE LAST STOP, WEAPON TO THE SHOWERS AND THAT WAS THAT. FOR GRAFFITI IN THE SYSTEM.>>WOW! A BIG YEAR FOR NEW YORK CITY FOR POSITIVE REASONS OF THE BACK TO THE TRAINS. SO IS THIS SOMETHING THAT WE’LL SEE? OF COURSE WE ARE HEARING THAT THE MTA IS PROPOSING ANOTHER FARE HIKE. IS THIS SOMETHING THAT OUR FARE DOLLARS WILL BE PAYING FOR? WHAT IF PEOPLE ARE SAYING, I DON’T SEE WHAT THE BIG DEAL IS. WHY DO I HAVE TO KEEP SHELLING OUT MORE MONEY FOR SOMETHING THAT SOME OF THE MONEY MIGHT CONSIDER FRIVOLOUS?>>SHOULD I POINT OUT THAT SOME OF THESE PEOPLE WHO HAVE BEEN ARRESTED, THESE VANDALS HAVE BEEN FORCED TO PAY RESTITUTION AS PART OF THEIR PUNISHMENT, IT IS SOMETHING TO KEEP IN MIND. IT NOT CHEAP TO CLEAN A SUBWAY CAR. THAT IS A COST TO THE MTA. THEY WANT TO KEEP THAT DOWN AND TO HAVE IT GO UP AS IT DID IN 2018 FROM TWO YEARS EARLIER, HAS TO BE AN ALARMING FIGURE.>>WHEN YOU MENTION ARRESTS, DO WE KNOW HOW MANY OF THESE VANDALS HAVE BEEN ARRESTED? AND HOW MANY HAVE THEY BEEN ABLE TO DIFFERENTIATE FROM PERHAPS GANG MEMBERS OR ARTISTS?>>THE NYPD DIDN’T LAY IT POUT CLEARLY. THERE HAVE BEEN SEVERAL CASES. MANY INVOLVE PEOPLE WHO CAME FROM OVERSEAS. ONE OF THE OLD TIME GRAFFITI ARTISTS TOLD ME THAT IT IS BECAUSE THE WORK, WHICH WAS UNDERGROUND HERE IN NEW YORK FOR SO LONG, WHEN MOVIES AND BOOKS STARTED COMING OUT ABOUT GRAFFITI, IT INSPIRED PEOPLE. IT BECAME AN INTERNATIONAL PHENOMENON AND HERE WE ARE IN 2019 SEEING PEOPLE COME OVER. ONE OF THE MTA OFFICIALS SAID IT IS LIKE GETTING A 10-POINT BUCK IF YOU’RE A HUNTER. I’M NOT A HUNTER BUT THAT SOUNDS LIKE A BIG PRIZE.>>SOLE LOCALS CAMPAIGN, PEOPLE SEE THEM AS A PRIZE. IT IS EYEBROW RAISING. SO WHEN IT COMES TO THE REPORT THAT AT LEAST YOU WERE ABLE TO DO, ALL THE INFORMATION YOU WERE ABLE TO GET ABOUT THE CLEANING OF THE TRAINS AND THE MAINTAINING OF THEM, WHAT WAS SOMETHING THAT AT LEAST STOOD OUT MOST TO YOU ABOUT THE AMOUNT OF MONEY THAT THE CITY, THE TIME AND MONEY BEING INVESTED?>>WELL, IT IS STRIKING. AS I SAID, IN 1989, THE MTA HAS THIS ANNIVERSARY WHICH HAS BEEN CELEBRATED AS THE LAST TIME THAT CARS ROLLED THROUGH THE SYSTEM. TRAINED TAGGED IN GRAFFITI. NOW IT IS AN UNDERGROUND THING AGAIN. ON SOCIAL MEDIA, IT’S NOT. PEOPLE TAKE PICTURES AND IT GETS OUT THERE. THAT’S HOW IT CAME THE MY ATTENTION. WHEN I HEARD THE FIGURES, LET’S BE FAIR HERE. IT IS NOT THE 1970s, THE 1980s. IT IS NOT MONEY THAT THE MTA NEEDS TO BE SPENDING AT THIS POINT WHEN THERE ARE SO MANY OTHER CONCERNS IN TERMS OF SERVICE.>>CERTAINLY NOT. NOW THAT WE’VE GOT A NEW HUDSON YARDS OPEN AND THE BEAUTIFUL ARTISTIC STAIRCASE, SO MANY THINGS TO POST ON SOCIAL MEDIA WOULD BE MY POINT, OTHER THAN JUST YOUR TAG ON A TRAIN. WE’LL SEE IF THIS CURBS ANY OF THE BEHAVIOR. THANK YOU.

The reason why people think graffiti is disgusting is because people don’t have time to do a good piece if you go to a legal wall the graffiti is colorful and great but on trains it’s not good because the artists are nervous they have to do it quick and it won’t turn out good so yeah

Jose Martinez, straight ass hat. City always worried about the wrong things and dumping money where it doesn’t make sense.

The graffiti makes the trains look better at least it shows some ny culture unlike you silver spoons privileged fucks yall say something yall do looks good and shows culture when it doesn't but whsn we do it its a crime

Getting tired of graffiti days from the 1950s as soon 2005-2010 and 2014 I know I want to see crime and vandalize with blood and Cribs and the gang member and graffiti unwanted artist ever again I'm tired of 20th century and 18th century days we won a better service now and the days of right now I hate f**** graffiti on the public transportation system😡🚉👿🗽🚇

Graffiti on trains is a sign of the degradation of NYC. I lived in NYC during that time and if the people of NY keep making excuses for criminal behavior history will repeat itself. If artists want to spray paint a train maybe they should buy one.

I'm just curious and wonder where are the 70s and 80 trans with graffiti on them would be old time capsule to bring see those 🚆 again
